What should you know about fungal culture swab?

A clinician may gently rub or scrape material from a changing patch, scaling edge, moist area, nail, or scalp. The sample is sent to a laboratory, where it may be placed in conditions that allow a fungus to grow. This can help distinguish a fungal cause from eczema, irritation, bacterial infection, or another skin problem. A result is interpreted alongside the appearance, location, symptoms, and medical history; the swab alone does not explain every rash.

Tell the clinician about creams, shampoos, or antifungal medicines used on the area, because recent treatment can affect what grows in a sample. Follow any instructions about washing or stopping a product. Keep the area clean and avoid picking at it. Once the result is available, use treatment exactly as directed; an oral antifungal treatment may be considered when a clinician confirms that a deeper, extensive, or hard-to-treat infection needs it.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the area is rapidly spreading, very painful, warm, swollen, draining, or accompanied by fever. Seek earlier review for a scalp infection with hair loss, an infection involving the eye area, or symptoms in someone with reduced immunity. A persistent rash also deserves reassessment when the culture is negative, since another condition may need a different test or treatment.

Ask where the sample was taken, when the result is expected, whether any products should be paused, and what a positive or negative result would change. You can also ask whether another sample or examination is needed if the skin continues to change.
