What should you know about an FUE implanter pen?

After follicular units are harvested and examined, a graft is loaded into the hollow needle of the pen. The clinician positions the needle on the planned recipient area, then places the graft while controlling its direction and depth. This may help coordinate graft placement in a hairline, parting, crown, or other thinning region.

The pen does not diagnose hair loss or create a donor supply. Results still depend on diagnosis, graft quality, hairline design, site preparation, handling, and the surgeon’s judgement. The device may be used in a direct-hair-implantation style workflow, but terminology varies between clinics, so ask what your provider means by FUE with an implanter pen.

Ask who will perform harvesting, graft preparation, site creation, and implantation. Request an explanation of how the team protects grafts from drying or crushing, how the hairline and angles will be planned, and what aftercare applies to the implanted area. Tell the clinician about medicines, scalp disease, previous procedures, and any tendency to form raised scars.

After treatment, use only the washing, sleeping, exercise, and medication plan supplied by the clinic. Do not rub, scratch, or dislodge crusts, and keep follow-up appointments so early healing can be assessed.

Contact the treatment team for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, persistent bleeding, or swelling that worsens instead of settling. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting, or swelling around the eyes that affects vision. Prompt review can distinguish expected irritation from infection or another complication.

Ask which pen and needle sizes will be used, who controls graft placement, how depth is checked, and how the team plans natural direction in different scalp zones. Ask what signs should prompt a same-day call after the procedure.
