What should you know about frizzy hair and oily scalp?

Short answer

Frizzy lengths and an oily scalp can occur together because scalp oil does not evenly moisturise damaged or porous hair shafts.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Oil source
Scalp oil is produced at the roots, not throughout each strand.
Conditioning
Keep conditioner mostly on the lengths and ends.

Why the pattern happens

Oil is produced at the scalp, while frizz often reflects the condition of the lengths and ends. Washing less may leave oil and scale behind, but vigorous scrubbing or harsh products can roughen the cuticle and make the lengths look drier. Sweat, humidity, styling residue and frequent touching can add to the contrast.

Flaking, redness or itch may occur with Dandruff or Seborrheic Dermatitis. The combination does not identify one condition by itself; a clinician may need to inspect both the scalp and the hair shaft.

A balanced hair-care routine

Cleanse the scalp as often as needed for comfort, placing shampoo at the roots and allowing the lather to rinse through the lengths. Apply conditioner mainly from mid-length to ends, detangle gently, and avoid heavy oils on a scalp that becomes greasy quickly. Reduce hot tools and tight hairstyles, especially when the hair is already fragile.

If flaking or itch persists, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether Medicated Shampoo Treatment is suitable and how long to use it. Stop a product that causes burning or a new rash.

When to seek care

Seek assessment for persistent redness, thick scale, soreness, oozing, pustules, marked itching, or noticeable thinning. Prompt review is sensible when symptoms spread beyond the scalp or begin after a new chemical or cosmetic product.

Questions for your doctor

Is the oiliness accompanied by dandruff or dermatitis? Which cleanser suits my scalp and hair texture? Should I use a medicated product, and what signs would mean I should stop or return?

Questions people ask

Why are my roots oily but my ends frizzy?

Oil may remain near the scalp while damaged, porous ends lose water easily and respond strongly to humidity and friction.

Should I stop washing an oily scalp?

No. Gentle, regular scalp cleansing can remove oil and residue; adjust frequency to comfort and use conditioner on the lengths.
