Fresh Blood Spotting After a Period: What to Know

Spotting may follow a change in contraception, ovulation, missed doses of hormonal medicine, or irritation after sex. Chlamydia and other cervical infections can also cause bleeding. Polyps, uterine fibroids, or changes in the lining of the womb may be found during assessment.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and womb cancer can present with bleeding between periods, although spotting alone does not establish any diagnosis. A clinician may ask about cycle timing, pregnancy possibility, pain, discharge, and medicines before choosing an examination or tests.

Write down the first and last day of your period, when spotting appeared, its colour and amount, and any cramps or discharge. Arrange an appointment if the pattern is new, keeps returning, follows sex, occurs after a missed period, or affects daily life.

Take contraception and other medicines as prescribed unless a clinician advises otherwise. If pregnancy is possible, ask about testing. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or vaginal treatments, because the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or weakness. If pregnancy is possible, spotting with pain or dizziness needs prompt assessment. Seek timely review for bleeding that becomes more frequent or occurs after menopause.

Ask whether you need a pregnancy test, infection swabs, cervical screening review, or an ultrasound. Ask how fibroids or polyps would be assessed, when results should arrive, and which changes mean you should return sooner.
