What should you know about freezing genital warts at home?

Products intended for common hand or foot warts are not automatically suitable for the vulva, penis, scrotum, groin, or around the anus. Incorrect placement or excessive cold can cause a burn, ulceration, bleeding, infection, or a change in skin colour. A growth in this area may also be something other than a wart, so treating it blindly can delay the right assessment.

Genital warts are associated with human papillomavirus and may occur in more than one spot. A clinician can inspect the surface, ask about symptoms and exposure, and select treatment for the exact site. Options may include prescribed cream or in-clinic freezing; treatment removes visible lesions but does not guarantee that new lesions will not appear.

Arrange an appointment with a dermatologist, gynaecologist, urologist, or sexual-health clinician. Until then, avoid acids, home freezing kits, cutting, tying off, and picking. Keep the area gently clean and dry, avoid sexual contact if rubbing causes discomfort, and use barrier protection while awaiting advice; it reduces but does not eliminate HPV transmission.

Ask whether testing for other sexually transmitted infections is appropriate and whether HPV vaccination is relevant to you. A clinician may discuss Imiquimod Treatment or Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal), depending on the number, size, and location of lesions.

Seek prompt medical assessment for bleeding without clear rubbing, an open sore, severe pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, rapid growth, or a lesion that is dark, firm, or irregular. Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, or difficulty passing urine. These signs do not diagnose cancer, but they should not be managed with a home freezing product.
