What should you know about a free skin cancer check?

Short answer

A free skin cancer check can look for suspicious skin changes, but a clinician must assess any concerning lesion and decide whether follow-up or testing is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a skin check means

A skin check is a visual examination of moles, freckles, marks and other areas of skin. The clinician may inspect the whole body or focus on a particular concern. A dermatoscope can magnify and illuminate a lesion so its surface features are easier to assess. A screening visit can flag a lesion for monitoring, a closer examination or biopsy; it cannot confirm cancer from appearance alone.

How to prepare and follow up

Before the appointment, note when a mark appeared and whether it has changed in size, shape, colour, border, sensation or behaviour. Mention previous skin cancers, significant sun exposure, medicines that affect healing and any family history that matters. Ask what the check includes, who performs it and what happens if a lesion needs further assessment. Continue checking your skin between visits and protect exposed skin from intense ultraviolet exposure.

When to seek care

Arrange a timely dermatology assessment for a new or changing mole, a sore that does not heal, repeated bleeding or crusting, or a dark mark with an irregular appearance. Seek prompt medical advice for a rapidly changing lesion, a painful or infected-looking area, or a mark that concerns you even after a reassuring screening visit. Do not wait for a free event if a lesion is changing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which areas were examined, whether any lesion needs a photograph or review, what changes should trigger an earlier visit, and whether you need a diagnostic appointment rather than screening.

Questions people ask

Is a free skin check a diagnosis?

No. It can identify a lesion that needs assessment, monitoring or testing, but appearance alone does not confirm skin cancer.

Should I attend if a mole is changing?

Yes. A changing mole deserves clinical assessment, and you should describe the changes and when they began.
