What should you know about formation of gallstones?

Short answer
Gallstones form when bile becomes unbalanced and hardens into stones inside the gallbladder, sometimes blocking bile ducts and causing pain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How stones develop
The gallbladder stores bile, a fluid that helps digest fat. Stones can develop when bile contains more cholesterol or pigment than it can keep dissolved, when the gallbladder does not empty effectively, or when bile becomes concentrated. A stone may stay in the gallbladder without causing symptoms. Trouble begins when it irritates the gallbladder or moves into a duct. Gallstones can cause upper-right or upper-middle abdominal pain, often after eating, with nausea, vomiting or indigestion. Obesity is one factor associated with gallstone formation, but stones can occur without it. A blocked duct can inflame the pancreas, leading to Pancreatitis.
What you can do
Keep a note of pain location, timing, meals and associated symptoms. Avoid crash dieting and discuss gradual, sustainable weight management if relevant to you. A GP Consultation can assess your history, examine your abdomen and decide whether blood tests or imaging are needed. Do not self-treat repeated attacks with leftover medicines.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, repeated vomiting, faintness or pain spreading to the back. These features can indicate infection, obstruction or pancreatic inflammation. Arrange an appointment for recurrent pain after meals, ongoing nausea or unexplained indigestion.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit gallstones, which tests could identify a blockage, how to manage meals while waiting and whether treatment is needed if stones are found.

Questions people ask
Do gallstones always cause symptoms?
No. Some remain in the gallbladder without causing noticeable problems and are found during testing for another reason.
Can gallstones affect the pancreas?
A stone moving into a shared duct can obstruct drainage and contribute to pancreatitis, which needs urgent medical assessment when severe pain or vomiting occurs.
