What should you know about a TENS unit for the foot?

Short answer
A TENS unit may temporarily change how foot pain feels by sending mild electrical impulses through skin pads, but it does not treat every underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- May help modulate pain; it does not diagnose the cause
- Pads
- Use only on intact skin and follow placement guidance
- Stop if
- Burning, rash, dizziness, worsening pain, or unusual symptoms occur
How it works
TENS uses a battery-powered device connected to adhesive pads placed on intact skin near, rather than directly over, the painful area. The electrical sensation is usually adjusted to a strong but comfortable level. It can be considered for selected pain patterns, but relief varies and may not address a fracture, infection, nerve problem, or pressure from footwear. A diagnosis remains useful when pain is new, worsening, or limiting walking.
Using it thoughtfully
Follow the device instructions and any guidance from a clinician or physiotherapist. Check the skin before and after use, keep pads away from broken or numb skin, and stop if there is burning, worsening pain, rash, dizziness, or an unusual reaction. Do not place pads across the front of the neck, head, or chest. Ask before use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, or another condition that could affect safe placement.
When to seek care
Do not use TENS to delay assessment of a swollen, hot, red foot, an open wound, severe pain after injury, new weakness, or new numbness. Seek urgent care for a deformed foot, inability to bear weight, fever, or a pale or blue colour change. If pain keeps returning or the device provides no useful change, arrange a review so the underlying problem and alternatives can be considered.
Questions for your doctor
Is TENS suitable for the suspected cause of my foot pain? Where should the pads go, and what setting is appropriate? Could reduced sensation or an implanted device make it unsuitable? What treatment should address the cause as well as comfort?

Questions people ask
Can TENS heal a foot injury?
TENS may alter pain perception, but it does not repair a fracture, infection, wound, or structural problem.
Can I place TENS pads on numb skin?
Avoid numb skin because you may not detect excessive stimulation or skin irritation; ask a clinician about safer placement.
