Foot swelling in early pregnancy

Short answer
Mild foot swelling can occur in pregnancy, but swelling that appears suddenly, affects one side, or comes with other symptoms should be assessed by a clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Often helpful
- Raise your feet, move gently, and wear non-tight footwear.
- Tell your clinician
- Report persistent, worsening, or difficult-to-walk swelling.
- Urgent signs
- One-sided painful swelling, chest symptoms, or sudden facial swelling needs prompt help.
Possible reasons for swollen feet
Pregnancy changes how the body holds fluid and how blood returns from the legs. Heat, standing for long periods, tight footwear, and salty meals can make puffiness more noticeable. Swelling may affect both feet and ease after rest, but the timing and pattern matter.
Early or marked swelling is not automatically pre-eclampsia. That condition is more often considered with raised blood pressure or other findings, so antenatal checks help put the symptom in context.
Comfort measures
Rest with your feet raised, avoid standing still for long periods, and choose comfortable shoes and socks that do not constrict your skin. Gentle ankle movements and short walks may support circulation if your maternity team says activity is suitable.
Drink regularly and do not take water tablets or sharply restrict fluids unless prescribed. Tell your clinician if swelling persists, worsens, or makes walking difficult.
Warning signs
Seek prompt maternity advice for sudden swelling of the face or hands, a severe headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, vomiting, or feeling very unwell; these symptoms can occur with pre-eclampsia.
Get urgent help for swelling and pain in one leg, warmth or redness, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting, or coughing blood. These symptoms can signal a circulation problem and should not be managed at home.
What to discuss
Ask whether your blood pressure and urine need checking, whether the swelling pattern is expected for your stage of pregnancy, and which exercises or support garments are appropriate for you.

Questions people ask
Can I massage swollen feet in pregnancy?
Gentle comfort measures may be suitable, but ask your maternity team first if swelling is new, one-sided, painful, or rapidly changing.
Does foot swelling mean pre-eclampsia?
Not by itself. Pre-eclampsia is assessed using symptoms, blood pressure, urine checks, and other clinical findings.
