Food poisoning and tingling hands and feet

Vomiting and diarrhoea can disturb hydration and body salts, which may cause pins and needles, cramps, or weakness. Fast breathing during pain, fear, or repeated vomiting can also produce tingling around the mouth or in the hands. Food poisoning itself does not explain every cause of numbness, so persistent, spreading, or one-sided symptoms should be assessed.

Sit or lie safely, slow your breathing, and take small sips of water or an Oral Rehydration Therapy solution if you can swallow. Avoid strenuous activity and alcohol. Note whether tingling follows vomiting, affects both sides, or changes after fluids. Do not drive if you feel faint, weak, confused, or unable to use your limbs normally.

Call emergency services for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe confusion, difficulty walking, trouble breathing, collapse, or a seizure. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly spreading tingling, severe weakness, inability to drink, very little urine, or persistent symptoms after vomiting and diarrhoea settle. IV Fluid Therapy may be needed for significant dehydration.

Tell the clinician when tingling began, whether it is symmetrical, and how it relates to vomiting or diarrhoea. Ask whether hydration, medicines, blood-salt changes, or another condition could explain it and what follow-up is needed.
