Food poisoning symptoms: how long can they last?

Food poisoning does not follow one fixed timeline. Some triggers irritate the stomach quickly, while others affect the bowel over a longer period. [Nausea](/symptoms/nausea/) and vomiting may precede diarrhoea; cramps and altered bowel movements may remain while inflammation settles. A gradual reduction in frequency and improved ability to drink are reassuring signs. Symptoms that stay intense or change character may indicate a need to look beyond foodborne illness.

Avoid alcohol and foods that aggravate symptoms. Keep separate from others when possible, wash hands carefully, and do not handle food for people at home until you are well. Record the timing of symptoms and any suspected food exposure.

Seek urgent help if you have severe abdominal pain, blood in stool or vomit, fainting, confusion, or repeated vomiting that blocks fluid intake. Get prompt advice for worsening weakness, marked thirst, very little urine, or a fever with deterioration.
