Food poisoning and skin rash: what to know

Food poisoning more often causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or fever. A rash can occur when a food triggers an allergic reaction, when a toxin affects the body, or when a separate viral or skin condition happens at the same time. Hives are raised, itchy areas that can move around; a fixed red patch may have a different cause. The timing, appearance, itch, fever, and other symptoms help a clinician sort these possibilities.

Stop eating the suspected food and keep its packaging or a note of its ingredients if available. Sip fluids, and consider Oral Rehydration Therapy if vomiting or diarrhoea is causing fluid loss. Avoid trying unfamiliar medicines on the rash. Do not share food prepared from the same batch until the cause is clearer. A clinician may ask when the rash began, what it looks like, and whether anyone else who ate the food became ill.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange prompt medical assessment for a rash with a high fever, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked weakness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions may need earlier advice.
