What is food poisoning incubation?

Some causes trigger symptoms quickly, while others need time to multiply or produce irritation. Later illness can follow food eaten earlier, not only the latest meal. Incubation helps frame questions but cannot establish a diagnosis or identify one food alone.

Make a timeline of meals, drinks, travel, symptoms, and unwell contacts. Rest, return to food gradually, and wash hands with soap after bathroom use and before handling food.

Seek same-day advice if vomiting prevents drinking, diarrhoea is not improving, or you become weak or dizzy. Go urgently for severe abdominal pain, blood in stool or vomit, confusion, fainting, or very little urine. The incubation gap does not make these signs less serious.
