Food poisoning from rice symptoms

Short answer
Food poisoning from rice can cause nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever; replacing fluids is the priority.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common symptoms
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, and sometimes fever
- First priority
- Replace fluids in small, frequent sips
- Food safety
- Discard rice with uncertain storage
What the symptoms may mean
Cooked rice can become unsafe when it is left at room temperature for too long, allowing germs or their toxins to build up. Symptoms may begin relatively soon after a meal or later, depending on the cause. Rice-related food poisoning commonly presents with nausea, vomiting, loose stools, and cramping. A fever can occur, but its absence does not rule out food poisoning. These symptoms can also occur with other infections, so the timing of the meal is a clue rather than proof.
The main concern is fluid loss. A dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness when standing, unusual tiredness, or passing urine less often can signal dehydration.
What to do at home
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting makes drinking difficult, pause briefly and restart with teaspoon-sized sips. Once you can eat, choose light foods and avoid alcohol and foods that worsen nausea. Wash your hands carefully and do not prepare food for other people while you have diarrhoea or vomiting.
Do not eat leftover rice if its storage has been uncertain. An [Oral Rehydration Therapy](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/oral-rehydration-therapy/) page explains how replacement fluids support recovery. Severe dehydration may require [IV Fluid Therapy](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/iv-fluid-therapy/).
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint or confused, have severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or signs of marked dehydration. Contact a clinician promptly for a high or persistent fever, symptoms that are not easing, or illness in a baby, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a serious long-term condition. Call emergency services for collapse, severe breathing trouble, or new confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/), whether testing is useful, which fluids are suitable, and whether any regular medicine should be adjusted while you are vomiting or having diarrhoea.

Questions people ask
Can rice food poisoning cause vomiting without diarrhoea?
Yes. Vomiting may occur alone at first, although diarrhoea and cramps can develop later.
What should I drink?
Water or a correctly prepared oral rehydration drink can replace fluid; take small sips if you feel sick.
