Food poisoning after McDonald’s: what to know

Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever after eating may fit food poisoning, but symptoms do not establish which meal caused them. Other infections can look similar. Record what you ate, when symptoms began, and whether anyone else in your group is unwell. This helps a clinician decide whether testing or further assessment is needed.

Sip oral rehydration fluid regularly and rest. Eat small portions when you can tolerate them, and avoid alcohol or rich foods until your stomach settles. Wash hands well, clean shared surfaces, and avoid preparing food for others during vomiting or diarrhoea. Keep the receipt or meal details if available, and report concerns through the relevant local food-safety channel if several people became ill.

Seek medical advice when symptoms are severe, persistent, or stopping you from drinking. Urgent care is appropriate for blood or black stool, severe pain, faintness, confusion, very little urine, repeated vomiting, or persistent fever. Seek earlier guidance for a child, older adult, pregnancy, weakened immunity, or a significant long-term condition.

Ask whether your symptoms require a stool sample, how to replace fluid loss, and which medicines are safe with your health conditions. Give the meal time, symptom sequence, travel details, and names of anyone else affected.
