How a food reaction may look

Hives are raised, itchy areas that can appear and fade in different places. Redness, flushing, or swelling around the lips and eyes may also occur. These signs can have other causes, including infection, contact irritation, medicines, or heat, so the timing and the full symptom pattern matter.

A skin reaction can occur with mouth or throat symptoms, breathing problems, vomiting, dizziness, or marked weakness. A skin change does not tell you whether a reaction will remain mild.

Steps after a skin reaction

Stop eating the suspected food and note when the skin changes began. Follow any action plan from your clinician and use prescribed medicine as directed. Avoid rubbing the area and do not deliberately reintroduce the food to test it. Arrange assessment if the reaction is new, recurrent, or difficult to link to a food.
