What should you know about folliculitis oral antibiotic treatment?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles and may have infectious or non-infectious triggers. Mild, limited cases may not need oral medicine. A clinician considers the number and location of spots, tenderness, drainage, recurrence, immune health and whether the infection is spreading into nearby skin. Oral antibiotics are different from treatments for conditions such as Cellulitis, and the medicine must match the suspected bacteria. A swab or other assessment may be useful when episodes recur or treatment has not helped.

Take the prescribed medicine at the stated times and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, kidney or liver disease, and all medicines or supplements. Avoid squeezing lesions; keep the area clean, use a fresh towel, and do not share razors. Contact the prescriber about severe diarrhoea, a widespread rash or other concerning reaction. Improvement should be monitored rather than assumed.

Seek urgent care if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin turns dusky, fever develops with marked illness, or a lesion is near the eye. Emergency help is needed for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Arrange review if new spots continue, drainage increases or the prescribed treatment is not helping.
