What should you know about folate receptor alpha ovarian cancer?

Folate receptor alpha is a protein found on the surface of some ovarian cancer cells. A laboratory can test tumour tissue to see whether the marker is present and how strongly it is expressed. The result is one part of the diagnosis; it does not describe every feature of the cancer or predict an individual's experience.

Assessment may include imaging such as a Pelvic Ultrasound, examination, and pathology. Genomic Tumour Profiling and BRCA Genetic Testing answer different questions: one examines tumour features, while the other may assess inherited or tumour-related genetic changes depending on the test.

Ask the oncology team whether folate receptor alpha testing has been performed on a suitable sample and whether the result changes the options available to you. Care may involve Chemotherapy, surgery such as Oophorectomy or Ovarian Cancer Debulking Surgery, and symptom-focused support. Palliative Care can be introduced alongside cancer treatment to help with pain, nausea, fatigue, emotional strain, and practical needs; it is not limited to one stage of illness.

Contact your care team promptly for persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, new severe abdominal swelling or pain, fever, unusual bleeding, or sudden breathlessness. During treatment, urgent advice is also needed for confusion, fainting, or a rapidly worsening condition.
