Fluconazole skin rash treatment: what to know

A fungal rash may cause itch, scale, cracking, or a defined edge, but these features are not enough to confirm the cause. A clinician may examine the skin and consider its site, extent, recurrence, and previous treatment. Some infections respond to a topical medicine, while others may call for an oral option such as fluconazole.

Fluconazole travels through the body and can interact with medicines. The prescriber may need to consider liver health, heart rhythm, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and allergies before recommending it.

Take fluconazole exactly as directed and complete the prescribed plan unless a clinician tells you to stop. Do not use someone else’s medicine or repeat an old prescription for a different-looking rash. Wash hands after touching the area, keep skin folds dry, and avoid sharing towels or clothing until you have received advice.

Tell the clinician about all medicines and supplements. Report a new rash, severe nausea, unusual tiredness, yellow eyes or skin, or dark urine. If the rash is not settling, it may need reassessment rather than more fluconazole.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, blistering, peeling skin, widespread painful redness, or sores in the mouth, eyes, or genital area. Fever with a rapidly spreading rash should also be assessed without delay.
