Flaking of Skin in the Scalp

Peeling can follow sunburn, a new hair product, friction, or very dry skin. Psoriasis may cause persistent, thicker scale and plaques, while a fungal infection can affect skin in other body areas as well. Athlete's foot is one example of a fungal skin condition, but scalp symptoms need their own assessment rather than assuming the same treatment will work.

Pay attention to whether the flakes are loose or stuck, whether the skin is red or sore, and whether the problem extends beyond the scalp. Skin peeling with blisters, open areas, or discharge deserves medical attention.

Protect the scalp from further sun and heat, use lukewarm water, and wash with a mild cleanser. Do not pull off attached skin or apply household oils, acids, or strong antiseptics. Stop a suspected irritant and keep the area clean. If scaling continues, a dermatologist can distinguish irritation from psoriasis or infection and select treatment suited to the scalp.

Seek review for persistent peeling, increasing redness, pain, crusting, blisters, oozing, fever, swollen glands, or hair loss. Urgent assessment is warranted for facial swelling, severe pain, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Ask whether this is peeling skin, dermatitis, psoriasis, or infection; which products and sun exposures may have contributed; and what symptoms should prompt an earlier follow-up.
