Fishy vaginal smell after sex: what to know

Semen can change vaginal acidity for a short time, making an existing odour more noticeable. A fishy smell may also occur with bacterial imbalance or an infection, particularly when there is a change in discharge, itching, burning, pain, or discomfort with urination. Sex can make irritated tissue more noticeable, but the smell does not identify the cause on its own.

A clinician can ask about symptoms and sexual health, examine the area, and take a swab when appropriate. Testing is useful when the odour returns, lasts beyond the immediate post-sex period, or is accompanied by other symptoms.

Rinse the external area with water, dry gently, and avoid douching or scented products. Do not place soap, deodorant, or home remedies inside the vagina.
