First Symptoms of Toxic Shock

Toxic shock syndrome is a serious reaction to toxins produced by certain bacteria. It can affect several body systems at once, so a person may become unwell quickly rather than developing one isolated symptom. A rash may resemble sunburn and can spread across the body. Later, the skin may peel, but do not wait for that sign. The illness can occur during tampon use, after childbirth, with a wound, or alongside an infection.

Seek emergency medical help immediately if these symptoms occur together or worsen quickly. If a tampon or menstrual cup is in place, remove it and tell the clinician what was used and when. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused. Keep the suspected wound clean and avoid placing anything else in the vagina until assessed. A hospital team may check circulation, organ function, and the source of infection, then provide treatment such as fluids and antibiotics.

Call emergency services for fainting, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, confusion, cold or clammy skin, very little urine, or rapidly worsening illness. Urgent assessment is also needed for sudden fever with a rash, repeated vomiting, or diarrhoea when you are using a tampon or recovering from a procedure, birth, or wound. Symptoms can be caused by other illnesses, but only prompt clinical assessment can distinguish them safely.

Ask which symptoms should trigger a return to hospital, whether an infection source needs treatment, and when it is safe to use internal menstrual products again. Mention recent surgery, childbirth, wounds, skin infections, or vaginal products.
