First symptoms of heat stroke

Heat stroke happens when the body cannot control its temperature after intense heat exposure or exertion. Confusion, unusual behaviour, poor coordination, faintness, or a seizure are especially concerning because the brain is being affected. Sweating may be present or absent, so damp skin does not rule it out. This is different from Heat Exhaustion, which can cause heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, and dizziness but may progress to heat stroke.

Call emergency services as soon as heat stroke is suspected. Move the person to shade or an air-conditioned place, remove unnecessary outer clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, cool water, or fanning. Stay with them and place them on their side if they are vomiting or not fully alert. Do not force drinks into someone who is confused, drowsy, or unconscious. Hospital care may include IV Fluid Therapy and active temperature management.

Heat stroke is an emergency whenever there is confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, or a very high body temperature after heat exposure. Vomiting with worsening weakness, severe headache, or altered awareness also requires emergency assessment. Do not wait for symptoms to settle in a cool room.

After recovery, ask what exposure or medicines may have increased your risk, how to return safely to exercise, and how to prevent another episode. Mention any kidney, heart, or other long-term condition when discussing heat precautions.
