Fingernail fungus from acrylic nails: what to know

Acrylic enhancements can lift slightly from the natural nail, creating a space where moisture and debris remain. Filing, cuticle injury, shared tools, or prolonged dampness can also weaken the nail barrier. A fungal nail infection may cause thickening, crumbling, separation, or yellow, white, or brown change, but these signs can also follow trauma, allergy, bacterial growth, or product staining.

Do not seal a suspicious nail under a new enhancement. A clinician may inspect the nail and, when needed, test material before choosing medicine. Nail change alone does not prove a fungal infection, and treating the wrong cause can delay recovery.

Remove acrylic nails gently rather than pulling or prying them off, and pause further enhancements until the natural nail has been assessed. Keep nails short, clean, and dry; dry carefully after washing and wear gloves for wet work. Do not share files, clippers, or towels, and disinfect reusable tools according to their instructions.

If fungus is confirmed, treatment may involve a topical antifungal applied to the nail, an oral antifungal chosen after reviewing medical history, or another approach. Laser treatment or nail surgery may be discussed in selected situations, but neither should replace diagnosis. If athlete's foot is present, treating the feet can help reduce ongoing spread to nails.

Book a dermatology appointment for persistent nail discolouration, thickening, lifting, crumbling, or pain after acrylic removal. Seek prompt care for redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or tenderness around the nail, especially if symptoms worsen. A dark streak, pigment reaching the surrounding skin, or a change affecting one nail without a clear injury needs timely assessment rather than cosmetic cover-up.

Ask whether the change looks fungal or may be caused by trauma, allergy, bacteria, or staining; whether testing is useful; and how long the natural nail may take to look normal. Discuss topical versus oral treatment, medicine interactions, care of the other nails and feet, and when acrylic use could be reconsidered.
