Finger pyogenic granuloma treatment at home

A pyogenic granuloma is a small, raised growth made of fragile blood vessels. Despite its name, it is not pus and does not mean the finger is infected. It may appear after minor injury, repeated rubbing, or irritation around the nail or fingertip. The surface can look bright red, moist, or crusted, and light contact may cause bleeding.

Several finger growths can look alike. A clinician may examine its shape, surface, colour, and rate of change before choosing treatment. Avoid cutting, tying off, burning, or trying to drain it at home because these actions can cause bleeding, infection, or a wound that heals poorly.

Keep the area clean and dry, and cover it with a non-stick dressing if it catches on clothing or tools. Replace the dressing when it becomes wet or dirty. Reduce friction from rings, gloves, keyboards, or manual work, and do not pick at a crust. If bleeding starts, press a clean dressing firmly over the spot without repeatedly lifting it to check.

Arrange a dermatology appointment, particularly if the lump keeps returning after bleeding or interferes with using the finger. A clinician may discuss curettage and cautery, which removes the tissue and controls bleeding at the treatment site.

Seek prompt medical care if bleeding does not settle with steady pressure, the finger becomes increasingly red or swollen, pain worsens, or drainage and fever develop. Arrange assessment soon for a rapidly enlarging, repeatedly bleeding, very dark, or unusually firm growth, or for a sore that does not heal. Urgent care is sensible if swelling or pain limits finger movement or the dressing becomes soaked through.
