Finger growth plate fracture: what to know

Growth plates are areas of developing tissue near the ends of children's and teenagers' bones. A jam, fall, ball impact, or crush injury can damage the growth plate and may also affect the nearby joint surface. Pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and difficulty bending or straightening are common clues. The finger may look crooked, but it can also appear fairly normal. An examination and imaging help determine the fracture's position and whether the bone is aligned.

Arrange medical assessment promptly after a suspected injury, especially when the child cannot use the finger normally. Until reviewed, keep the hand elevated, protect the finger from further knocks, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Do not try to straighten the finger or tape it tightly without guidance. Depending on alignment and stability, care may include a splint or fracture casting; some injuries need fracture fixation surgery.

Go to urgent care if the finger is bent or rotated, becomes numb or blue, feels cold, has an open wound, or cannot move. Increasing pain or swelling after immobilisation also needs prompt review. Follow-up matters because a growth plate injury may require repeat checks of alignment and movement as healing progresses.
