Fine needle aspiration and breast cancer

A clinician may recommend this test after an examination or breast imaging identifies an area that needs clarification. The sample can contain fluid, normal cells, inflammation, or abnormal cells. A result suggesting cancer is interpreted with the examination and imaging; it does not by itself describe the full extent of a breast cancer or decide every treatment choice.

The procedure is usually performed with the person awake. The skin is cleaned, and the needle is guided into the area, sometimes using ultrasound. Several passes may be needed to obtain enough cells. Mild tenderness or a small bruise can occur afterward.

Before the appointment, tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and any possibility of pregnancy. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the breast. Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines rather than stopping a prescribed drug on your own.

After sampling, keep the site clean and follow the dressing advice. Ask when the cytology report is expected and how it will be explained. If the sample is insufficient or does not match the imaging finding, the team may suggest repeat sampling, a core biopsy, or another assessment.

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, swelling continues to increase, or the area becomes increasingly red, hot, or draining. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, rapidly worsening swelling, fainting, breathing difficulty, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Ask which area will be sampled, whether imaging guidance is planned, when to expect the report, and what the next step would be for each possible result.
