Fine-needle aspiration biopsy: what to know

A clinician cleans the skin and guides a fine needle into the area being assessed. The needle draws out cells or fluid, sometimes during several brief passes. Ultrasound or another imaging method may help target a deep or small area. The material is sent to a laboratory, where it is examined for features that may indicate inflammation, infection, a benign change, or cancer.

The sample may not contain enough representative material. In that situation, the team may suggest repeating the aspiration, taking a core biopsy, or using another test. The report is considered with symptoms, examination, and scans.

Before the appointment, provide a full list of medicines and mention blood-thinning treatment, allergies, pregnancy, or bleeding problems. Follow any instructions about eating, drinking, or medicine changes. After sampling, mild soreness or bruising can occur; keep the dressing and wound care as instructed.

Ask who will explain the report and when to expect it. If cancer is found, further pathology, genomic tumour profiling, or imaging may help guide treatment. Fine-needle aspiration is a diagnostic step, not a treatment by itself.

Call the clinic for bleeding that continues despite pressure, increasing redness or swelling, drainage, fever, or pain that is getting worse. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness, particularly when the sample was taken from the chest or neck. Follow the team’s specific aftercare instructions.
