What should you know about figure of 8 splint for clavicle fracture?

Short answer
A figure-of-eight splint loops around both shoulders to encourage support after a clavicle fracture, but fit and medical review matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Support area
- Both shoulders and the upper back
- What it cannot do
- It cannot replace fracture assessment or repair the bone by itself
- Monitor
- Skin pressure, hand colour, sensation, strength, and breathing comfort
How it is used
The clavicle, or collarbone, connects the breastbone to the shoulder. A figure-of-eight design passes around the shoulders and across the back, helping remind the shoulders to stay supported. It does not join the broken bone or replace assessment of fracture position. The appropriate support depends on the fracture pattern, skin and nerve findings, pain, and whether the bones remain aligned. Splinting is the broader treatment category. Some fractures need Fracture Fixation Surgery when alignment or stability cannot be managed with external support.
Using the support safely
Wear the splint only as directed and have its straps adjusted so it supports without cutting into the skin or restricting breathing. Check the skin around the shoulders, back, and armpits. Keep the arm and hand moving as instructed to limit stiffness, while avoiding lifting or impact until cleared. Sleeping positions and washing instructions should come from the treating clinician. Later, Physiotherapy may guide shoulder mobility, posture, and strength as the fracture becomes ready for progressive movement.
When to seek care
Ask for a fit check if the splint slips, causes pressure, creates skin damage, or makes pain worse. Seek urgent care after a new injury, increasing deformity, severe swelling, or sudden loss of arm function. New numbness or weakness, a pale or cold hand, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or trouble swallowing requires urgent assessment because these symptoms may involve nerves, blood vessels, or nearby structures.
Questions for your doctor
Is this splint suitable for my fracture pattern? How tight should it feel, and how often should the skin be checked? Which arm movements are allowed now? What findings would make surgery or a different support worth discussing?

Questions people ask
Should a figure-of-eight splint be painful?
It may feel unfamiliar, but significant pressure, worsening pain, skin breakdown, numbness, or breathing difficulty means the fit needs prompt review.
Will everyone with a clavicle fracture need one?
No. Support is selected according to the fracture and the person's examination; a sling or another plan may be more suitable.
