What should you know about fibrostenotic Crohn's disease?

Repeated inflammation in Crohn's disease can thicken the bowel wall and leave fibrous scar tissue. This narrowing, called a stricture, may cause cramping abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting or altered bowel movements. Diarrhoea can occur too, especially when liquid passes around a narrowed area. Symptoms may come and go, and their intensity does not reliably show how tight the narrowing is. A clinician may combine your story and examination with blood tests and imaging or endoscopy to distinguish active inflammation from established scar tissue.

Arrange a GP or gastroenterology review if symptoms are recurring or meals are becoming difficult. Keep a note of pain, vomiting, bowel movements, weight change and foods that worsen symptoms. Until assessed, follow the diet advice already given to you; do not make major restriction changes without support. Treatment may target inflammation, while a fixed narrowing may need a procedure or surgery discussion. Take prescribed medicines as directed and do not use anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician says they are suitable.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or wind, fever, faintness or signs of dehydration. These can indicate obstruction or another complication and need prompt assessment rather than home observation.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest active inflammation, scar-related narrowing or both; which test is appropriate; what foods and fluids are sensible while waiting; and which warning signs should send you to emergency care. Ask how each treatment option may affect future narrowing.
