What should you know about fibroepithelial neoplasm favor fibroadenoma?

Fibroepithelial describes a growth containing both glandular and supporting tissue. Fibroadenomas are usually benign, solid breast lumps that may be smooth and mobile. On a small biopsy, some fibroepithelial lesions can share features with other fibrous breast growths, so the pathologist may say the tissue favours fibroadenoma rather than naming the result with absolute certainty.

The scan, examination and biopsy are interpreted together. The report wording does not mean that the lump is automatically cancer, and it does not mean that follow-up can be skipped.

Ask whether the pathology result matches the imaging appearance and whether the sample was sufficient. Depending on the lump's size, growth, symptoms and level of agreement between tests, your team may suggest clinical observation, repeat imaging, another biopsy or removal. Contact your clinician promptly if the lump grows quickly, becomes fixed, causes marked discomfort or is joined by nipple inversion, bloody discharge, skin dimpling or an underarm swelling. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, major swelling or fever. Follow-up remains useful even when the report favours a benign diagnosis.

Ask what features led the pathologist to favour fibroadenoma, whether the result is concordant with imaging, and whether removal would improve certainty. Confirm the follow-up interval and the specific changes that should bring you back sooner.
