Fibroadenoma on breast imaging

On imaging, a fibroadenoma may appear as a solid, oval or gently lobulated mass with a defined edge. Radiologists also consider its orientation, internal texture, blood flow and whether it has changed compared with earlier images. These features help classify the finding, but an imaging description is not the same as a tissue diagnosis.

A radiology reference can help explain terminology, but your own report must be interpreted alongside your age, examination and symptoms. Breast Ultrasound is often used to assess a palpable lump, and Breast Biopsy may be advised when imaging and examination do not agree or when the appearance is not sufficiently characteristic.

Ask the clinician to translate the report into a clear plan: observation, repeat imaging, biopsy or removal. Bring earlier reports or images if available because comparison can show whether the finding is stable. If the lump is painful, enlarging or difficult to feel consistently, mention that specifically. Breast Lump Excision is one possible treatment when removal is appropriate.

Book a breast assessment for a new lump or a noticeable change in an established one. Seek prompt review for a firm fixed area, skin puckering, nipple inversion, spontaneous unusual discharge, or an armpit lump. Fever with spreading redness or rapidly worsening swelling needs urgent care. An imaging label should never delay review of a new red flag.
