Fibroadenoma breast USG: what to know

USG is a common abbreviation for ultrasound. The scan uses a handheld probe and gel on the skin to create images of breast tissue; it does not use x-rays. The sonographer may examine the lump in more than one direction and compare it with surrounding tissue.

A fibroadenoma may have an appearance that supports a benign solid lump, but ultrasound cannot answer every diagnostic question. Results are interpreted alongside your age, examination, symptoms, and any earlier images. A biopsy may be advised when the appearance is unusual, the lump changes, or certainty is needed.

Wear clothing that allows the breast and underarm area to be examined, and tell the imaging team exactly where you feel the lump. Take any previous reports or images if available. The scan itself is generally brief, though pressure from the probe may be uncomfortable over a tender area.

Ask when and how the result will be explained. Depending on the findings, the next step may be follow-up imaging, Breast Biopsy, or observation. If the lump is symptomatic or continues to grow, Breast Lump Excision may be discussed.

Contact a clinician promptly for a rapidly enlarging lump, new skin dimpling, nipple inversion, spontaneous bloody discharge, or a red, hot breast with fever. Do not wait for an old ultrasound result to explain a new change; breast tissue can change and may need reassessment.
