Fever with rash on the arms and legs

Note whether the rash is on both sides, follows a contact area, or is spreading beyond the limbs. Check if it is flat, raised, blistered, scaly, itchy, bruised-looking, warm, or painful. Chickenpox can cause itchy spots that change over time; Cellulitis more often affects a local area with warmth, tenderness, and expanding redness. Viral illnesses such as Common Cold or COVID-19 may also cause fever and skin changes, while a new medicine or product can trigger a reaction.

Take photographs and write down the start time, spread, temperature readings, recent medicines, new foods or products, travel, insect bites, and sick contacts. Keep the skin cool and clean, avoid scratching, and wear loose clothing. Drink regularly and use only medicines suitable for the person’s age and health. Avoid starting leftover antibiotics or steroid creams before professional advice, since they may obscure the rash or be unsuitable.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, confusion, a stiff neck, severe headache, or purple or bruise-like spots that do not fade when pressed. Prompt assessment is needed for rapidly spreading redness, severe skin pain, blistering, skin peeling, or a person who looks seriously unwell. Seek advice for persistent fever, a rash after a new medicine, or symptoms in a baby or someone with reduced immunity.

Ask whether the appearance suggests an infectious rash, contact reaction, or skin inflammation, and whether close contacts need precautions. Bring photographs, medicine packaging, and a clear timeline of fever and rash changes.
