Fever and cold feet in adults

During a fever, the body may narrow blood vessels in the hands and feet while it raises its internal temperature. Chills can make your feet feel cold even when your measured temperature is high. Infection-related illness, dehydration, or being in a cool environment can add to the sensation.

Cold feet alone do not identify a particular illness. A respiratory infection such as Common Cold or COVID-19 may cause fever and chills, while skin redness, swelling, or tenderness may point toward Cellulitis. The condition presents with the symptom; the symptom does not establish the diagnosis.

Measure your temperature with a reliable thermometer and note when the fever and coldness began. Rest, drink fluids regularly if you can, and use light layers rather than very hot baths or heating devices directly on the skin. Check whether both feet have similar colour, warmth, and sensation.

Arrange medical advice if the fever persists, returns after improving, or you have a long-term illness or weakened immune system. A clinician may ask about travel, animal exposure, cough, rash, urine symptoms, and medicines.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, confusion, collapse, a blue or grey appearance, severe weakness, or skin that is cold and clammy. Get urgent assessment if one foot becomes markedly colder, pale, numb, painful, or difficult to move, or if a rapidly spreading rash accompanies the fever.
