What should you know about fetal heart rate at home?

Short answer
A home Doppler may detect fetal heart sounds, but it cannot reliably confirm that your baby is well or explain a change in symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- A heartbeat is not a wellbeing check
- A sound alone cannot assess movement, oxygenation, growth, or the full fetal heart pattern.
- Movement changes matter
- Contact your maternity team promptly if your baby’s usual movement pattern changes.
- Clinical monitoring
- CTG and non-stress testing are interpreted with your symptoms and pregnancy history.
The short answer
Finding a heartbeat can be reassuring, yet it may be your own pulse, placental sounds, or a signal that is difficult to interpret. A heartbeat can also be present when another pregnancy problem needs attention.
What a home reading means
Clinicians assess fetal heart rate alongside the stage of pregnancy, fetal movements, contractions, bleeding, pain, blood pressure, and other findings. A handheld device used at home usually gives only a brief sound or number, without the continuous pattern that a clinical fetal monitor can record.
A fetal heart rate check in a clinic may be part of cardiotocography, also called CTG, or a non-stress test. These assessments use trained interpretation and may lead to further checks when the pattern or your symptoms raises concern.
What to do if you use one
Use a home Doppler only if your maternity clinician has discussed it with you, and do not use a result to decide that you can stay home. Do not spend time searching for a heartbeat when you feel unwell or notice less movement.
If you are worried about fetal movements, stop the check and contact your maternity unit or obstetric clinician. Tell them how far along you are, what changed, when you noticed it, and whether you have pain, bleeding, fluid leakage, contractions, dizziness, or fever.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, or a home reading that concerns you. Do this even if you have heard a heartbeat.
Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fainting, trouble breathing, or feeling acutely unwell. Your local maternity service can tell you where to attend and whether you need immediate transport.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask whether a home Doppler is appropriate for your pregnancy, which symptoms should prompt a call, how your maternity unit wants movement concerns reported, and what clinical monitoring would be used if you attend for assessment.

Questions people ask
Can a home Doppler tell me that my baby is safe?
No. It may detect heart sounds, but it cannot reliably confirm fetal wellbeing or rule out a pregnancy complication.
What if I hear a heartbeat but feel less movement?
Contact your maternity team promptly. Hearing a heartbeat should not delay assessment of reduced or changed fetal movement.
What is CTG fetal monitoring?
CTG, or cardiotocography, records the fetal heart pattern and uterine activity so a trained clinician can interpret them together.
