What should you know about female spotting after period?

Light bleeding between periods may follow a hormone shift, ovulation, contraception, irritation after sex, or an infection such as chlamydia. Polyps, uterine fibroids, cervical dysplasia, and changes in the womb lining can also cause irregular bleeding. Cervical cancer and womb cancer are less common possibilities that clinicians may need to exclude, particularly when bleeding keeps returning or occurs with other concerning symptoms. Spotting alone does not establish any one diagnosis.

Note the colour, amount, timing, relation to sex, pain, discharge, contraception, and pregnancy possibility. Arrange an appointment if the spotting repeats, follows sex, lasts beyond the expected end of a period, or is accompanied by pelvic pain or unusual discharge. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, cervical examination, or imaging depending on your history. Treatment is directed at the identified cause; a radical hysterectomy is used only for selected cervical cancer situations, not routine spotting.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for bleeding after menopause, bleeding after sex, or a new pattern that does not settle.
