Swollen vein in the palm of the hand: what to know

Hand veins can look more prominent after heat, exercise, gripping, dehydration, or keeping the hand below heart level. A new cord-like area may instead be related to irritation of a superficial vein, nearby tissue swelling, or recent pressure or injury. Swelling around the wrist or hand can make normal veins stand out. A clinician will consider the colour, temperature, tenderness, distribution, and timing, as well as medicines and health conditions. Persistent swelling in several joints can occur with Rheumatoid Arthritis, although a palm vein alone does not establish that diagnosis.

Compare both hands in similar positions and note when the change appears. Remove tight rings or bracelets, rest from forceful gripping, and keep the hand comfortably elevated if it is puffy. Gentle finger movement can prevent stiffness unless movement is sharply painful. Do not massage a tender cord or apply intense heat to a red, painful area. Seek urgent care if the hand becomes suddenly very swollen, blue, pale, cold, numb, weak, or severely painful, or if redness rapidly spreads. Get prompt advice for fever, pus, a painful red vein, swelling after an injury, or difficulty moving the fingers. Emergency help is appropriate if hand symptoms occur with chest pain or sudden breathing difficulty. Do not wait for a routine appointment when circulation or infection may be affected.

Ask whether the visible structure is a vein or another lump, whether circulation or inflammation needs checking, and whether an injury or medication could explain it. Mention when it started, whether it changes with hand position, and any swelling, warmth, colour change, or numbness.
