Feet swelling in the last month of pregnancy

Short answer
Feet swelling in the last month of pregnancy is often linked to fluid retention and pressure from the growing uterus, but sudden or marked swelling needs maternity assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Worse after standing or later in the day
- Useful check
- Blood pressure and urine assessment
- Urgent clue
- Sudden swelling with headache or vision changes
What the swelling can mean
Pregnancy changes can make the body hold more fluid. As the uterus grows, it can also slow blood returning from the legs, so swelling may be more noticeable around the ankles and feet after standing or later in the day. It may improve after rest and raising the legs. Swelling that appears quickly, affects the face or hands, or is accompanied by a severe headache, vision changes, pain under the ribs, or feeling very unwell can be associated with pre-eclampsia. Swelling in one leg with warmth, redness, or pain needs urgent assessment because a clot is another concern.
What you can do today
Rest on your side when comfortable and raise your feet when sitting. Avoid standing still for long periods; gentle walking and ankle movements can support circulation. Choose roomy shoes and socks that do not leave tight marks, and drink regularly rather than restricting fluids. Do not start water tablets, herbal products, or a very low-salt diet without advice from your maternity team. Mention new swelling at your next antenatal visit, where blood pressure and urine can be checked.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity unit promptly if swelling is sudden, rapidly worsening, or involves your face or hands. Seek urgent help for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, upper abdominal pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, or reduced baby movements. One-sided painful swelling, especially with warmth or redness, also needs urgent review. Read more about [Pre-eclampsia](/conditions/pre-eclampsia/).
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Could my blood pressure and urine be checked today? Is the pattern of swelling expected for my stage of pregnancy? Which symptoms should make me call the maternity unit immediately? Is movement, exercise, or a support stocking suitable for me?

Questions people ask
Is foot swelling late in pregnancy always dangerous?
No. Gradual swelling in both feet can occur as pregnancy changes circulation, but sudden, marked, or symptom-linked swelling should be assessed.
Should I drink less to reduce swelling?
No. Keep drinking regularly unless your clinician gives different instructions, and avoid self-prescribed water tablets.
