Cold hands and feet but a hot body

During fever or overheating, the body changes blood flow and sweating to manage temperature; hands and feet may feel cool while the trunk feels hot. Stress can narrow small vessels in the extremities. Anaemia and iron-deficiency anaemia may cause fatigue, paleness, dizziness, or cold intolerance. Hypothyroidism can make you unusually sensitive to cold, although it does not explain every hot sensation. Peripheral arterial disease may cause a persistently cool foot, colour change, walking pain, or slow-healing sores. Cold Hands and Feet is a useful symptom description, not a diagnosis.

Check your temperature with a thermometer rather than relying only on touch. Rest in a comfortable room, drink fluids if you can, and wear light layers that can be removed. Avoid ice or very hot water on cold fingers and toes. Note sweating, chills, cough, pain, rash, dizziness, colour change, and whether one side differs from the other. Arrange medical advice if the sensation persists, repeats, or accompanies a fever or other illness.

Seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, a seizure, or skin that is blue, grey, or mottled. Obtain urgent assessment for a suddenly cold, pale, painful, numb, or weak limb. A persistent fever with worsening weakness, dehydration, severe headache, or a stiff neck also needs prompt care.

Ask whether the symptoms suggest an infection, temperature-regulation problem, anaemia, thyroid condition, or circulation issue. Tell the clinician your measured temperature, onset, medicines, fluid intake, and whether chills, sweating, pain, or colour changes occur.
