What should you know about favor fibroadenoma?

Fibroadenomas are often smooth, firm and clearly outlined. They may move slightly under the fingers when the breast is pressed, which is why they are sometimes called a breast mouse. They can occur in one or both breasts and may change in size as hormones change. Many are not painful, although tenderness can occur, especially around a menstrual period. These features can fit a fibroadenoma, but touch alone cannot confirm the diagnosis; other breast lumps can feel similar.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new, growing or persistent lump. A clinician may recommend a Breast Ultrasound to see whether the lump is solid and how its edges look. Depending on your age, examination and imaging findings, a Breast Biopsy may be suggested to examine tissue. If a confirmed fibroadenoma is small and stable, monitoring may be reasonable. Removal through Breast Lump Excision can be discussed when it is enlarging, uncomfortable, difficult to assess, or causing ongoing concern.

Seek prompt medical review for a lump that is new, enlarging, hard, fixed or associated with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a change in breast shape. New redness, warmth, marked swelling or fever also deserves timely attention. Most breast lumps are not cancer, but the symptom itself cannot identify its cause, so do not wait for pain or other changes before arranging an examination.

Ask what features were seen on examination or imaging, whether tissue sampling is needed, and what change should trigger a repeat appointment. You can also ask whether monitoring or removal fits the lump’s size, symptoms and appearance.
