What should you know about fat transfer around eyes?

A clinician first examines the lower eyelids, tear troughs, skin quality, facial movement, and the amount of available donor fat. A small amount of fat is collected from a donor area, processed, and placed in tiny amounts around selected hollows. The aim is gentle blending rather than a heavy or puffy appearance.

Swelling and bruising can temporarily make the area look uneven. Some of the transferred fat may be absorbed as healing progresses, so the early appearance is not the final result. Existing tear trough hollows may also reflect pigmentation, loose skin, or shadows, which fat alone may not address.

Before treatment, share your medicines, allergies, eye conditions, previous fillers or surgery, and any history of swelling. Ask how the donor site and eyelids will be managed, and whether another option such as dermal fillers is more suitable for your anatomy.

Arrange transport if sedation or surgery is planned. Follow the aftercare instructions for sleeping position, cleansing, exercise, and medicines. Avoid pressing or massaging the treated area unless your clinician specifically advises it. Bruising, tightness, and swelling should gradually settle during recovery.

Contact your treating clinician promptly if swelling is rapidly worsening, pain is severe or escalating, the skin becomes unusually pale or dusky, or the area feels hot with spreading redness. Seek urgent medical help for any new vision change, double vision, severe headache, weakness, or trouble moving the eye.
