What is the fastest way to heal sunburn?

Short answer
The fastest way to support sunburn healing is to cool the skin, moisturise gently, drink fluids, and avoid further sun exposure.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful first step
- Cool the skin gently and moisturise it.
- Avoid
- Ice, scrubbing, picking, and more sun.
What sunburn means
Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet light. Red, warm, tender skin may later peel, and more severe injury can produce fluid-filled blisters. Peeling does not mean the skin should be pulled away; the new surface underneath is sensitive.
The colour and discomfort can take time to settle. A sunburn can also add to longer-term sun damage, so cover the area and use shade until it has recovered.
What to do now
Take a cool shower or apply a clean, cool, damp cloth for short periods. Pat dry, then apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser or emollient while the skin is slightly damp. Loose clothing reduces rubbing. Drink regularly, and do not place ice directly on the skin.
Do not burst blisters, scrub peeling areas, or use products that sting. Keep the affected area out of direct sunlight; a hat or clothing is useful when sunscreen would irritate broken skin. Learn more about Sunburn and Emollient Therapy.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, fever, marked weakness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Urgent assessment is sensible after a large burn, a burn involving the eyes or face, or symptoms of heat illness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern of blistering needs examination, which moisturiser is suitable for your skin, and whether any medicine is appropriate for the inflammation or discomfort. Ask how to protect the area during recovery and when normal skincare can resume.

Questions people ask
Should I peel sunburned skin?
No. Let loose skin shed naturally and moisturise the area without rubbing.
Can I put ice on a sunburn?
Avoid direct ice because extreme cold can further injure already inflamed skin.
