Face tinea versicolor treatment: what to know

Tinea versicolor is an overgrowth of a yeast that normally lives on skin. On the face it may create lighter, darker, or pinkish patches with fine scaling. The areas may become more noticeable after sun exposure because affected skin may not tan in the same way. Colour can remain uneven after the yeast is controlled, so fading is not an immediate measure of treatment response.

A clinician may examine the pattern and scale before choosing treatment. Similar-looking changes can have different causes, including other rashes or pigment conditions.

A topical antifungal may be prescribed or recommended for facial use; follow the product directions and keep it away from the eyes and lips. A medicated shampoo treatment can sometimes be used on skin as directed, but facial skin may need a gentler plan. Oral antifungal treatment is reserved for selected situations because a clinician must consider medical history, medicines, and monitoring needs.

Wash gently, dry the area carefully, and avoid scrubbing or picking. Use broad-spectrum sun protection to reduce contrast between treated and untreated skin. Do not share towels, although this condition is not spread by ordinary close contact.

Arrange an assessment if patches are spreading, inflamed, very itchy, painful, crusted, or close to the eyes, or if the diagnosis is unclear. Seek review when a correctly used treatment does not improve the scale or new areas keep appearing. Prompt care is appropriate for facial swelling, eye involvement, or a rapidly changing rash.
