Face, hands and feet swelling during pregnancy

Pregnancy can change circulation and fluid balance, so swelling may gradually develop in the ankles and feet, especially later in the day or after standing. Mild swelling can also affect fingers. Face swelling, rapidly increasing swelling, or swelling that appears suddenly is more concerning and should be discussed promptly. A swollen hand can also have a local cause such as injury, infection, or inflammatory arthritis; pregnancy does not explain every symptom.

Tell your midwife or obstetric team about new or increasing swelling and attend recommended blood-pressure and urine checks. Rest on your side when comfortable, avoid standing for long periods, take gentle movement breaks, and wear comfortable shoes. Keep hydrated and avoid restrictive rings. Do not take water tablets, pain medicines, or herbal products for swelling unless your maternity clinician has advised them. For persistent hand symptoms, your team may also consider the hand and wrist separately.

Contact your maternity service urgently for sudden swelling of the face or hands, a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain below the ribs, vomiting, marked breathlessness, or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, or sudden weakness. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than home monitoring.

Ask whether the swelling pattern is expected for your stage of pregnancy, when to repeat blood-pressure checks, and which warning signs require immediate contact. Ask whether a painful or one-sided swollen hand needs a separate examination.
