Eyes red, watery and itchy: what should you know?

Allergic conjunctivitis commonly presents with itching, redness, and watering in both eyes. It may accompany sneezing, a runny nose, or an itchy throat from allergic rhinitis. House dust mites, pets, pollen, and other airborne triggers can inflame the clear surface covering the eye. Irritants can produce a similar appearance, while infection becomes more concerning when there is sticky discharge, eyelids stuck together, or symptoms spreading to another person. The pattern gives clues but cannot confirm the cause at home.

Keep hands clean and resist rubbing, which can increase swelling and irritation. Remove contact lenses and eye makeup until the eyes are comfortable again. A cool compress over closed eyelids can ease itching and heat. Limit exposure to the suspected trigger: keep pets away from the bedroom, reduce dust, and avoid smoke. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable lubricating drops or allergy medication, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines.

Get urgent medical help for severe eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, pronounced light sensitivity, a chemical splash, or an eye injury. Prompt review is needed for swelling around the eye, fever, thick discharge, or symptoms in a contact lens wearer. Arrange routine assessment when episodes recur, last longer than expected, or do not improve after avoiding a suspected trigger.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergic conjunctivitis, whether testing or a different treatment is needed, and how long to avoid lenses. Describe the timing, both indoor and outdoor exposures, discharge, nasal symptoms, medicines, and any change in vision.
