What should you know about eyes feel dry and itchy?

When the eye surface lacks enough moisture, it may feel gritty, scratchy, tired, or itchy. Air conditioning, fans, smoke, dust, prolonged screen viewing, and contact lenses can make that sensation more noticeable. Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itching and watering even when the eyes also feel dry.

Allergic rhinitis may appear alongside itchy eyes, sneezing, or a runny nose. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible patterns when symptoms follow bedding, indoor dust, or animal contact. The combination does not establish a diagnosis by itself.

Take regular breaks from close screen work, blink deliberately, and keep direct fan or air-conditioning flow away from your face. Avoid smoke and fragranced eye products. Remove contact lenses when uncomfortable and wear glasses until the eyes feel settled. A cool compress may calm itching; clean lukewarm water can help rinse away surface irritants.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician about lubricating drops or allergy medication that fits your health needs. Do not use leftover prescription drops or share bottles, and stop any product that makes symptoms worse.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, strong light sensitivity, a new change in vision, injury, chemical splash, severe redness, or thick discharge. Urgent help is needed for rapidly increasing swelling around the eye or breathing trouble with facial swelling.

Arrange a routine assessment if dryness is persistent, one-sided, repeatedly interrupts sleep, or continues despite removing likely irritants. An examination can distinguish surface dryness from allergy or another eye problem.
