Eye tension headache: what should you know?

Short answer
Eye tension with a headache often reflects muscle strain, visual effort, or a tension-type headache, but sudden or unusual symptoms need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Close work, glare, poor sleep, dehydration, jaw clenching, and neck tension can all add strain.
- Useful record
- Note timing, triggers, duration, vision changes, and symptoms such as nausea.
What the sensation may mean
People may describe pressure behind the eyes, a tight band across the forehead, aching around the temples, or tired eyes. Long periods of close work, glare, poor sleep, dehydration, jaw clenching, and neck tension can contribute. A tension-type headache does not usually cause major vision loss. Eye strain can coexist with an uncorrected prescription or dry eye, so the pattern matters.
Ways to ease it
Take regular distance-viewing breaks during close work, adjust glare and lighting, blink deliberately, and relax the jaw and shoulders. Drink fluids and keep a steady sleep routine. Gentle neck movement may help if muscles feel tight. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow its label; frequent self-treatment for recurring headaches warrants medical advice.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, eye pain with vision loss, or symptoms after a head injury. Arrange review when headaches are new, changing, frequent, or preventing normal activity. An eye examination may be useful when blur or focusing difficulty persists.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits a [Headache](/symptoms/headache/) or eye-related problem, and whether your vision, medicines, sleep, jaw tension, or screen habits could contribute. Bring a short record of timing, triggers, duration, and associated symptoms.

Questions people ask
Is pressure behind the eyes always an eye problem?
No. Headache and neck or facial muscle tension can create pressure around the eyes, although persistent visual symptoms deserve review.
Should recurring eye tension be checked?
Yes. A clinician can review the headache pattern and decide whether vision or other assessment is appropriate.
