Eye boogers and red eyes: what they can mean

A small amount of clear or whitish material can collect while you sleep because tears, mucus and shed cells dry on the lashes. Watery discharge with itching may occur with allergic conjunctivitis, especially after exposure to dust, pollen or another trigger. Sticky yellow or green discharge, eyelids stuck together and redness can occur with conjunctivitis. A gritty feeling can also follow smoke, cosmetics, contact lens problems or rubbing.

The appearance of discharge does not identify its cause by itself. One or both eyes may be involved, and symptoms can spread through hand-to-eye contact. Avoid sharing towels or eye makeup until the cause is clearer.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Soften crusts with a clean pad moistened with lukewarm water, wiping from the inner corner outward and using a fresh pad for each eye. Do not scrape the lashes or squeeze the eye.

Pause contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye feels normal or a clinician advises restarting. Artificial tears may soothe irritation when appropriate; avoid using someone else’s drops, and do not use leftover antibiotic drops. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment after considering the pattern of symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care for severe eye pain, a marked change in vision, strong light sensitivity, an injury, a chemical splash, a bulging eye, or redness in someone who wears contact lenses. Get prompt assessment if swelling prevents the eye opening, symptoms are worsening, or a baby has a red eye with discharge.

Arrange a medical review when discharge keeps returning, redness does not settle, or symptoms are affecting both eyes and daily activities. Do not drive if vision is blurred.

Ask whether the pattern fits Conjunctivitis, whether allergies or a foreign body could be contributing, and whether you should stop contact lenses for longer. Mention the discharge colour and texture, when it began, one-eye or two-eye involvement, pain, vision changes, recent illness, and any new cosmetics or drops.
