What should you know about extreme tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor develops when a yeast that normally lives on skin grows more than usual. It commonly affects the chest, back, shoulders, neck and upper arms. Patches may be white, tan, pink, brown or darker than nearby skin, with a subtle powdery scale that becomes easier to see when gently scratched. Mild itch can occur, especially with heat and sweating. The condition is not a sign of poor hygiene and is not usually spread by ordinary contact. Colour can remain uneven after the yeast is controlled because pigment recovery takes time.

A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and choose topical antifungal treatment, medicated shampoo treatment or oral antifungal treatment when the affected area is broad or recurrent. Follow the application or dosing instructions fully, and tell the clinician about liver problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other medicines before oral therapy. Keep skin cool and dry where possible, but do not scrub aggressively or share medicated products.

Seek assessment if patches are rapidly spreading, very inflamed, painful, draining or unlike previous episodes. Arrange follow-up if the scale persists after treatment or the colour remains changed and you are unsure whether the yeast is still active; pigment may lag behind clearance.
